Julie Andrews Lived An Epic Love Story With Late Husband Blake Edwards For 41 Years: "Ah God I Wish He Were Here"

Julie Andrews and her husband respected and loved each other professionally and personally.

When you are married to someone for so long, they become one of the most important pillars of strength in your life. When someone loses this central figure in their life, it can shake their very core. Iconic actress Julie Andrews lived decades with her husband Blake Edwards, and when he passed away in December 2010, Andrews was left beyond heartbroken.

The beautiful couple met each other outside their therapist's office way before they got married in 1969. "I was going one way and he was going the other, he rolled down the window after smiling a couple of times and he said, 'Are you going where I just came from?'" recalled Andrews. Edwards further told her, "We would stop in the middle lane on Sunset [Boulevard, in Beverly Hills] waiting for traffic and then go on."

Recounting the moment he mustered up his courage to interact with her, he said, "I kept looking over, two or three mornings a week...eventually I said 'hi,'" according to Country Living

That interaction led to an epic love story that lasted for more than 41 years. The couple shared a blended family as the two were previously married. It included Andrew's daughter—Emma and Edwards' children—Jennifer and Geoffrey. They also adopted two children—Amy and Joanna—from Vietnam.

Not only did they create a wonderful family, but they also worked together in many movies. As a director, Edward knew what roles were best for his wife and gave her opportunities that brought out her full potential. Andrews, on the other hand, trusted her husband's skills. She called him "one of the bravest writers" she knew.

After Edward's death, Andrews spoke of their love and his loss in 2015.

She said, "We were married 41 years and it was a love story, it was. Success in our marriage was to take it one day at a time and so, lo and behold, 41 years later there we still were." Andrews continued, "I'm still dealing with [his death]. There are days when it's perfectly wonderful and I am myself and then it's suddenly—sock you in the middle of your gut and you think 'ah God I wish he were here," according to Country Living. She added, "But he is in a way, I think one carries that love always."

In 2010, Andrews referred to her late husband as the man who made her laugh the most. She remarked, "Grief is strange. It occasionally comes up and catches you unawares and hits you in the solar plexus or whatever," according to Hollywood Reporter

Undoubtedly, the couple had something very precious. Andrews cherishes every moment she spent with her husband.
